Calico Beans Gluten-Egg-Dairy Free Easy to Make

Most people think beans, no way, too hard for me to make. These are so easy to make because this recipe uses a slow cooker. You basically toss in all the ingredients, mix it, set it, and then go about your day. Of course, you will check on it and stir it, etc. You don’t have to stand over the stove cooking this dish all day. If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can still make these beans by baking them in the oven.

Suteed Onions with Salt and Peper

Sauteed onions are cooked in a frying pan with a bit of vegan butter and olive oil. When the onions start to turn color is when you add salt and pepper to taste. I always add salt and pepper to grilled onions because it enhances the flavor of the onion.

Beans

Looking at the photo above, you can see the different kinds of beans used to make Calico Beans. Kidney beans, Great Northern Beans, Butter beans, and on the left, the B & M baked beans with their liquid in the slow cooker.

Other Ingredients for Calico Beans

Add the beans’ sauteed onions, brown sugar, catsup, dry mustard, salt, and vinegar. Stir the beans with the ingredients until they are all well coated. You can either put them in the oven or start the crockpot.

Ready to cook beans.

If you use the range, make sure to bake for 2 hours at 300 degrees. If you use the crockpot, cook on medium heat for 3-4 hours. You know your crockpot. If it is better on low heat for 5 hours, use that setting for cooking the beans.

Finished Beans

The beans will smell delicious and taste just as good as they smell when they are finished cooking. You can serve them on the side of bbq, hamburgers, steaks, chicken, or pork. They are great as a main dish for those who are vegan. As an alternative, you can cook bacon with the onions to add to the beans.
