Five Hour Stew Gluten-Dairy-Egg-Free
This is a meal that you need a crockpot to cook it. Ok well, you can bake it in the oven as well, as use the crockpot, I just enjoy using my crockpot. This is a recipe that you put all the ingredients in and then five hours (or longer) later you have a meal. It is a great meal for busy people or when you have a lot of people to feed on a chilly day.
We cook this stew with beef. You could use other meat like deer, buffalo, or poultry (that is chicken or turkey). The vegetables that we use are carrots, celery, potatoes, and onion. Tomato juice, tapioca, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper.
The first step is to marinate the meat. Before you get afraid of this recipe, you already have the ingredients. You need a bowl to put the meat in. If your meat is not cut up into stew meat-sized pieces, then you will need to cut your meat to be that sized. Basically, cut the meat into about one-inch cubes. You can find stew meat in the meat section of the store. That is what I would recommend buying, but if you enjoy chopping up meat then go for it.
In your bowl put your meat in. You can salt and pepper the meat first if you want. I recommend doing this because it makes the meat taste better, but not necessary for good flavor. Pour the tomato juice over the meat. This will start to season the meat. Add the tapioca to the meat.
Put the Worcestershire sauce over the meat. Add the sugar to the mixture. If you did not salt and pepper the meat mixture, add that now. Mix the mixture up so that all the pieces are well covered by everything.
Ready to Cook
In the crockpot place the chopped onions, carrots, celery, and potatoes. Give the vegetables a mix so that they are well mixed well. Pour the meat mixture, with the sauce, over the top of the vegetables.
Make sure you mix everything together. Set the timer on your crockpot for five hours. You can check the crockpot and stir it occasionally if you want, but it is not necessary. Serve this with muffins, cornbread, or crackers on the side. This dish freezes and reheats well.
This stew is a warm dish to enjoy on a cool day.
